The vision of Africa has been obscured since the independance period of the 70's. Now here in South Africa we face our own vision. The eyes of these Africans tell a different vision from that one envisioned by Nelson Madela less that 14 years ago. Now President Mbeki, does your vision even remotely relate to that of the wondrous Nelson Mandela?

If we get there early in the morning we can get the mist rising from the mountain and the people still asleep. I was hoping we wouldn't bother anybody and get a few different pictures. Getting lost along the way, meant we arrived at seven that morning. As the news media reported the Somalians were on a hunger strike. Luckily the hunger strike had ended by the time we decided to go there.
I believe these people came to South Africa in search of a better life. They set up shop and supported there right to survive in an equal democracy. The local South Africans probably became jealous of there ability to survive in our instable economy. The goverment probably saw the attacks coming in January already! What do they care, in fact they sit with an even greater situation right now! The Somalians do not know where to go from here...

This year as seen a tremendous change in fortune for my work. I've been busy most of the time with an agency from Durban. They're awesome to work with. I've also recently teamed up with this NGO from New York on a project that I had in mind at the end of last year. They found me through the net and we've been doing some educational work for kids from the States. They get to learn more about our culture and the children in schools over here. It's a fantastic idea, you should check out the link from the heading.

I'm wondering what South Africans will spend their money on this year...I'm guessing diesel for the gennies, entertainment to enjoy their lives and security to keep on living.

I feel that the magazine industry falls into that big category of entertainment. I've come across quite alot of people who dream of owning the latest hip mag. I don't blame them, Maxim mag sells over 11 million copies a month. That's worldwide with outlets in most countries. Just imagine printing the mag over here and getting it sold for pounds in the UK. Yeah thats it, profits will soar and you'll be living the dream. I still believe in the magazine industry, but it's one tough nut to crack!

Considering the power cuts and the fact that we might not have clean water very soon, this year seems like its going to be another rollercoaster for us African citizens. I like living on the edge, whether it be shooting through my lens or just getting out of bed. Think of this country as a game of survivor. With no lights how will you survive, soon we might not have clean water, so how will you survive that. These are exciting times which will bring out the real Mzansi survivors!I don't really take to predictions but this one has been on my mind for some time now.

Crash, thunder, roar! This is the start to a year I've been waiting for. Got new jobs with two new clients, my car broke down on the way to one job, almost a total disaster, but yet this is the best photog start to a year I've had.

My camera got damaged, luckily its insured.

I've spent almost three years every weekend running up and down the shop floor of a restaurant I'd rather not mention. The constant rush of people seems relentless. I doubt its the food or the service for that matter, but I think the moths are attracted to the breathtaking view of Atterbury road or the seemingly peaceful outside patio area. Whatever their reasons that place never seems to be quiet.

For many of us that work there, it seems as if the soul of the shop is slowly disappearing. As waiter's we always believed that a spirit existed that would carry us until final rounds had been called, now it seems as if that soul has floated off from the mainline pass, out into the mall and lost its life support...

What happens when a restaurant loses its life support?

These images are of the kitchen staff, they are the life support, the engine that never runs out of gas. This guy godfrey is perpetually smiling, guess what he does...washes pots and pans all day! That place has taught me to be grateful for what I have!

As Shawn turned up the hill I knew this was the street that we cruised down a week ago in the pouring rain. I know now its called bezuidenhout street somewhere in Obz. With an open field on the hill top I got out stunned by the scene of these priests performing a ritual as the sun set from behind them. Our noses were hit by the putrid smell of decaying animal bones as the one side of the hill top embankment was littered with bones of what seemed to be goat remains. I shot a few frames as the priests continued to perform their ritual.

I wanted to shoot a mechanics of music styled thing with Sweat X in a panelbeaters in the old part of town, but Sweat X ran out of time. It was when Shawn and I were getting the keys for the workshop that I caught a view of the owner's hands and realised how fascinating I found his fingers wrapped around his keys. He had bumps and cuts all over his finger tips which often happens when mechanics are trying to fit new parts and they have to fasten the bolts which are placed in obscure little holes. It gave me an idea for a picture story of the hands that manual people use to make their living. So this is the First selection from that series.

Shawn drove through obz and down the hill but I have no idea what the street was called or where we will find this again, but I shot this as the ladies inside cut hair in the storm. It poured while we road up the hill passed the Sentech tower into Brixton and Fordsburg. Acorss the city we headed for a trip into the old suburbs of Hillbrow and Berea. Shooting random pics from the window was not entirely our intention but we would have been soaked, mugged and who knows what would have happended had we got out of the car in the middle of Hillbrow. From the passenger side I shot a few frames, a complete voyeurism but then we didn't intend to get off on others in the rain. I wanted to document the storm as it disrupted this Tuesday evening in one the busiest suburbs in Africa.

Through Hillbrow up the hill into observatory and around the block we drove through the rain taking random images from all over the city. This will probably lead to another adventure into our urban jungle, maybe even a picture story...

Well done to guys like Ross Garrett and

Liam Lynch who get this right all the time! I'm still learning about stage lighting and the angles of live music photography. Right now I reckon the stage is quite overcrowded with photogs trying to steal the shot from each other. But thats exactly how it is in evrything we do. I love the competitiveness it will drive me to shoot more everyday which is why I'm feeling like a lost soul without my camera at the moment. It's in for repairs so I will only have it back next year some time. What will I do till then? I'm seeing new angles all day but I just can't shoot them. Maybe Nikon will give me a loan piece for now. Maybe I can get a therapist to write me a letter prescribing the urgent use of a camera for medical reasons.I'm going to give that a try seen that I bought it overseas the world wide warranty does not cover these purchases.

The drive up to Chloorkop was pretty interesting that morning. I consider myself to be a Mamelodi Sundowns fan because I come from PTA and live closer to Mams than I do to PTA. But I'm not a die hard fan of the Brazillians.

Calvin was going to be part of our sport section of the first issue of Pantera Magazine. As the sunrose on that Autumn morning over walked the nonchalant figure of Calvin. This guy was so chilled and we chatted about various apsects of the PSL and his role in Bafana Bafana. There is so much abouth SA Football that we don't know...

John Barker just spoke so much about his love for the city and the mix of cultures that lead him to direct Bunny Chow. He went on about his love for Woodey Allen black and white films. Bunny Chow was all about the mix of cultures that we experience in Jozi on a daily basis. John swore that I'd have to put this into a full page of Pantera Magazine. The image proved a good choice so the editor pushed it for a full page.

If anybody has seen these guys around Rosebank or Wits then you'll know they're slightly mad! Parkour has taken off in our country and Jax and his crew run regular jams on weekends. Parkour is about moving through an urban environment using your body as a flexible tool. These guys go over walls, dustbins and across balconies. Think of spider man meets crazy monkey.

The old Jozi CBD is being renovated. A friend of mine works for a company called Earthworx. They're working on alot of the renovations that are underway in the old CBD area. This is Corlett House, the old mayor of JHB, Dan Corlett owned a panelbeating business way back in the 40's. I got to shoot some stuff for them just as they had started the renovations. Justin works for Earthworx and he's this really eccentric guy. He just gets so many ideas when he's in front of the camera! just before this shot he had squeezed himself into the old safe while I shot a few frames. This is inside the bigger walk in safe that they were renovating at the time. Funny how back then most of the old buildings had walk in safes.

At the front of the stage I stood while Waddy jumped into the crowd, i still have no idea how I took this shot. I pushed the shutter release and it just popped up onto the LCD screen. Its really weird cause its like a mirror image of Waddy on top of the crowd. Their is his real form then the mirror arm and legs but the movement and vibe are all captured in the shot. This was awhile ago. I had just started out shooting live music. I was this naive flashy stage photog. I hadn't learnt that the stage is for the performance and not for the photog to grab the show.

If your down and out in Jozi then Kippies is the place to find your soul. When you have a maestro like Sipho Mabuse running a jazz joint it's no wonder that the soul of the jazz scene will be alive for some time to come. When I walked through the doors of the old venue I got this feeling that I was experiencing a touch of the magic that made Newtown what it is today. Kippies might have moved but the soul of Jazz will hopefully swing with it to the new venue. Sipho Mabuse in his element!

Its been too long since I got back from the UK for me to go again. When I was over there it seemed the right thing to do, come back that is... It's not like I've lost faith but there is so much i want to find out about Mzansi and it feels like I'm running out of time on a daily basis. I am an African, it will always be home and the people will always interest me.

I wondered into Orlando East two weekends ago with Louise De Bruin to shoot a story about Traditional Healers. The story went well, but what the hell took the two of us so long to venture into Soweto. I have seen a few new buildings, met so many new faces but never travelled down the M1 South into Soweto. It won't be our last...

Its time I went into our country and found the life that breaths everyday. I wanna find the people in every walk of life and from every culture of our country!

I study with these girls and they play in a cool band called Japan and I. So just before Woodstock 8 I agreed to shoot these pics for their press pack. We went to a park near the Dome in Northgate and it was after some messing around that we got this shot.It worked out pretty well in the end.

It was by pure chance that I heard about this gig. I saw Tamith at Capp's and she gave me the details about the gig. Jax, Desmond and the Tutus and a few others collaborated in a completely unplugged evening at the intimate theatre in PTA. The venue was cozy and it was jam packed. The energy created by the close proximity of the acts and all in the crowd can be seen in this image. Thanks to all the acts, check out for the pics in the SL soon.
